Mama Elephant Tiny Heroes with a Vintage Look

Hi everyone,

I love Mama Elephant Tiny Heroes clear stamps set.  All the heroes are adorable especially when they are given bright colored outfits like this one I made earlier.

But today, I decided on trying something different.  Going for a more mellow color tone and to have a more vintage look.

So, this is what I came up with.

I inked the tiny hero using Memento Rich Cocoa, stamped it on a scrap paper first before I stamped the lightened Rich Cocoa on my 140lbs Water Color paper.  It is much lighter and more suitable for my attempt for a vintage look.

I water colored the image using Tim Holtz Distress Markers and here are the details of the colors I used,

  • Hair - Mustard Seed, Squeezed Lemonade and Wild Honey
  • Skin - Scattered Straw and Spun Sugar for light blush on the cheeks
  • Star - Mustard Seed
  • Mask, outfit and boots - Seedless Preserves
  • Cape - Vintage Photo
  • Ground - Forest Moss

For the ground, I used the Forest Moss marker and drew a line across where the hero is standing.  I used a wet brush and gently dab across the line, transferring a good amount of water to let the ink spread downwards by holding up the water color paper.  This allows the water to flow down naturally.

Next, I stamped the sentiment by altering a little.  The original stamp says “I Think You’re Super Duper In Every Single Way.  I decided to do away with “I Think” and so, I stamped “You’re” first by positioning it in the center above the hero.  Next, I stamped the rest of the message before “You’re”.  I used Memento Rich Cocoa for the sentiment but this time, I inked and stamped directly on the paper without lightening up the ink.

Lastly, I randomly stamp the stars around the sentiment and completed the whole image by blending some brown chalk around the four sides.

I adhered to a dark brown cardstock and finally, attached to the card base using foam tape.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this card.  Try out the way to I watercolor the ground.  I find it gives a very nice natural color blending and where I have applied the distress marker ink, it is still very clear and distinct.
